Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguisher Supply, Installation & Servicing

Merselec Fire supplies, installs and services fire extinguishers for commercial premises across Liverpool, Chester, Cheshire and the Wirral. Having the correct types and quantities of extinguisher in the right locations is a fundamental part of your fire safety provision and a requirement under current fire safety legislation.

Fire extinguishers are often treated as an afterthought, but getting them wrong creates real risk. Using the wrong type of extinguisher on the wrong class of fire can make a dangerous situation significantly worse. Our team ensures your premises are equipped with the right extinguishers for the specific risks present in your building.

Choosing the Right Extinguishers

Not all fire extinguishers are the same. Different types are designed to tackle different classes of fire, and using the wrong one can be ineffective or actively dangerous. The correct selection depends on the nature of your premises and the fire risks identified in your fire risk assessment.

The main extinguisher types and their applications are:

  • Water – suitable for Class A fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper and textiles
  • Foam – effective on Class A fires and Class B fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol and paint
  • CO2 – the correct choice for electrical equipment and fires involving flammable liquids, leaving no residue
  • Dry Powder – a multi-purpose option effective on Class A, B and C fires, though not recommended for enclosed spaces
  • Wet Chemical – specifically designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats, essential in commercial kitchens

Our engineers assess your premises and specify the correct extinguisher types based on the risks present throughout your building.

The number of extinguishers required and their placement are also governed by recognised standards. Extinguishers must be positioned so that nobody needs to travel more than 30 metres to reach one, and they must be clearly visible and accessible at all times.

Supply & Installation

We supply extinguishers from reputable manufacturers that meet the requirements of BS EN 3, the European standard for portable fire extinguishers. All units are correctly mounted at the appropriate height, clearly signed and positioned in line with the findings of your fire risk assessment.

Where existing extinguishers are in place, we can carry out an audit of your current provision to identify any gaps, incorrect types, or units past their service life that require replacement.

Servicing & Annual Inspection

Supplying the correct extinguishers is only part of the picture. Your staff need to know which extinguisher to use, when it is appropriate to attempt to tackle a fire and when evacuation is the priority. We can provide guidance on extinguisher awareness as part of our service, helping ensure your team is prepared to respond correctly in an emergency.

The general principle in current fire safety guidance is that extinguishers should be used only by trained individuals for small, contained fires where it is safe to do so. Evacuation always takes priority over firefighting.
