In the event of a power failure or fire, emergency lighting ensures that escape routes remain clearly illuminated, enabling occupants to evacuate the building safely and without delay.
Emergency lighting is a legal requirement for most commercial premises. It is not simply a matter of installing a few backup lights. The type of system, the positioning of luminaires and the testing regime all need to meet specific requirements and getting any of these wrong leaves your premises non-compliant and your occupants at risk.
Legal Requirements & British Standards
The design and installation of emergency lighting systems is governed by BS 5266, the British Standard for emergency lighting in buildings. This sets out the minimum requirements for illumination levels, operating duration, coverage of escape routes, and the signage needed to guide occupants to exits.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a premises has a duty to ensure adequate emergency lighting is in place and properly maintained. Failure to meet this requirement can result in enforcement action and, in the event of an incident, significant legal liability.

System Design & Luminaire Positioning
Effective emergency lighting depends as much on correct positioning as on the quality of the equipment installed. Luminaires must be placed to provide adequate illumination along all escape routes, at every change of direction, at each exit and emergency exit door, near firefighting equipment and at first aid points.
Our engineers carry out a detailed survey of your premises to map escape routes, identify all points requiring coverage and produce a system design that meets the requirements of BS 5266 without adding unnecessary cost.
We then recommend self-contained luminaires or central battery systems, depending on the size and nature of your premises, ensuring the solution is practical, cost-effective and fully compliant.
Installation & Commissioning
Our engineers expertly install emergency lighting systems, ensuring all luminaires are correctly positioned, securely fitted and properly wired. Central battery systems are installed and configured to provide the required operating duration for all connected luminaires.
On completion, the entire system is tested to confirm that every luminaire operates correctly on mains failure and that illumination levels meet the requirements of BS 5266 throughout the building. Full commissioning documentation is provided on handover.
Testing & Ongoing Maintenance
Emergency lighting systems must be tested regularly to demonstrate they are functioning correctly. BS 5266 requires a brief functional test monthly and a full rated duration test annually, with results recorded in a logbook that must be available for inspection.
Our engineers carry out these tests as part of a planned maintenance programme, providing a full written record of each test and flagging any luminaires that require attention. This provides the documentation needed to demonstrate compliance and offers early warning of any units approaching the end of their service life.
